Green Veggies Boost Immunity For Palmer Kids

Green Veggies Boost Immunity For Palmer Kids

Do your children catch every cold that goes around Palmer? Do they regularly have earaches, coughs, or runny noses? Including more green vegetables in their diets could boost kids’ immune systems and help them stay healthy, according to a study in the journal Cell.1

The study found that green vegetables help produce a chemical that is important for a strong immune system. The chemical provides signals to the immune cells in the gut and skin, helping them to function properly.

If your Palmer kids are like mine, convincing them to eat more green vegetables is as hard as getting them to clean their rooms. However, Anchorage parents can find sneaky ways to add more green vegetables to their children’s diets.

My kids love pasta and sauce so I puree spinach into the pasta sauce, disguising the leafy green immune booster. Adding kale to protein smoothies is another way to sneak green vegetables into their tummies.

My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to improve children’s health in Palmer and around Alaska. I also promote nuggets. If you would like more information about nuggets or children’s health issues contact me today!

Fun Peanut Butter Snacks For Anchorage Kids

Healthy, growing children need to snack between meals for proper nutrition. Most Palmer parents have probably had the experience of forgetting an afternoon snack. What happens? Kids finally notice they’re hungry about an hour before dinner, and boy is it hard to wait!

A great snack ingredient is peanut butter. It is an inexpensive source of protein and calories and gives Palmer children the nutrients they need to grow and to stay healthy.

Here are some great healthy snack ideas using peanut butter for Homer and Wasilla kids.

Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Bananas, cut in half width-wise
Popsicle sticks
Peanut butter
Chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other topping

Take the popsicle sticks and push them carefully into the cut bananas. Spread peanut butter over the bananas and roll in nuts or other topping. Freeze. Enjoy.

Peanut Butter Balls

This is the kind of recipe you can’t really mess up, and the portions are approximate.

about 1 cup of peanut butter
a few tablespoons of honey (2-3)
a few tablespoons of instant dry milk

Mix everything together until it forms a large ball. Pinch off small pieces of dough, and roll into ball shapes. Store in the refrigerator, and pull them out at snack time.

Teaching Anchorage Kids How To Budget

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

Wasilla Kids Vitamins

There is no dignity quite so impressive, and no independence quite so important, as living within your means.
-Calvin Coolidge

The 30th President of the United States was right to hold living within ones means in such high estate, and parents in the Palmer area should start teaching their children the value and responsibility of money early in life.

A good way to introduce the concept of the budget is to help your child to only spend 70% of what they earn or are given in allowance. Break up the other 30% this way: 20% for savings and 10% for charity. You can give your child different jars to keep the money in different “accounts”, or open up their own real savings account at any Wasilla, Homer, or Kenai bank or credit union, provided they are old enough.

Homer parents should take time to discuss savings with their child each time they divide their earnings. You can talk about reasons to save, such as waiting to buy an expensive toy or preparing for college.

Your child can be very creative with the 10% of the money meant for charity. Allow them to make the choice of where to give this amount and you will see them gaining a better sense of awareness of people who are in need (or, as the case often is for many Anchorage children, animals who are in need).

Even at a very young age, kids can begin to understand that money is a responsibility and better enjoyed when it is not all spent immediately.

My name is Geneve Campbell and I am passionate about kids health in Wasilla. I want to help Anchorage area parents to raise happy, healthy kids who can go on to enjoy living within their means.

I own a successful Palmer home based business that sells nuggets. If you would like to learn more, please contact me at 801-318-0001. We can discuss one of the many children’s health issues that is important to me, such as children’s nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations.

3 Tips For Improving Palmer Kids’ Attention Spans

Friday, February 14th, 2014

Wasilla immunization schedule

Hello Alaska parents! Today in the Palmer Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in Wasilla.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the Kenai, Homer, and Wasilla area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Anchorage libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

I’m Geneve Campbell and I am passionate about helping Alaska parents raise healthy and happy kids. I try to keep apprised on the latest in proper nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations. I am the owner of my own Palmer home business that promotes nuggets. 6 Fun Day-Off-School Activities For Wasilla Kids

Thursday, February 13th, 2014

Top Home Businesses In Kenai

Most of the elementary schools in Anchorage seem to have more random days off than in years past. Sometimes these days can catch parents off guard. What to do when your kids are going to be home all day in the middle of the week?! Well, if you didn’t schedule appointments with your Palmer pediatrician or dentist for a check-up, then try one of these fun ideas to keep your kids active and healthy on their days off.

1. Help them make a treasure hunt, indoors our out, depending on the weather. Once they’re done they can invite friends over to find the treasure (the treasure can be almost anything, since the real prize is following the clues!). When the hunt is over, serve a small picnic for the hungry hunters.

2. Hold an art exhibit. Get out the paints and modeling clay and then let your kids spend the morning creating works of art to display.

3. Healthy kids are active kids, so help them plan a kid Olympics! Give them the freedom to choose how to judge and award medals, then sit back and watch them wear themselves out!

4. Have a family history day. Encourage your kids to write in their journals and ask them to share some favorite family stories that you can record in their own words. If you have stories of your ancestors, this is a good time to share them with your kids.

5. Go visit a local Wasilla, Homer, or Kenai museum, historical site, petting zoo, or aquarium. Remember, this is a day to do something with your kids that you’ve always been putting off, so do it!

6. Visit a resident of a local Anchorage convalescent home. Some elderly men and women rarely get visitors. Your kids will feel good about brightening someone’s day. They could bring them flowers or an original piece of art. (See activity number 2.) My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Anchorage families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Kenai concern me. I am the owner of a Anchorage area home business that sells nuggets.

How Healthy Is Your Anchorage Community?

Wednesday, February 5th, 2014

How Healthy Is Your Anchorage Community? Hello Anchorage residents! Welcome to my children’s health blog, Anchorage edition. I came across an interesting article in Children’s Health Magazine that got me thinking about children’s health factors in Anchorage.

Have you considered how your Alaska community influences your child’s health? In a recent study, independent experts compiled statistics on more than 30 factors that are important to a child’s development including: crime and safety, education, economics, housing, education, cultural attractions, and health.1

Burlington, Vermont came out on top, receiving high marks in all areas of study. Burlington has the fewest fast food restaurants per capita and experts believe this is linked to the low rate of obesity. Clearly, the rate of obesity in Wasilla and Homer is partially due to the ready availability of Big Macs and Whoppers.

While moving to Burlington isn’t necessary for your Anchorage child to thrive, ask yourself how your own Alaska neighborhood ranks. If you think it could improve, attend Anchorage city meetings or make changes within your own home.

You could encourage more participation in sports, start a crime-preventing Anchorage neighborhood watch group, cook as a family, or seek out Wasilla museums and Palmer cultural events. Whatever you choose, your children will reap the health benefits of your efforts.

If you want to improve your Anchorage child’s nutrition, contact me today to learn about a nutritional supplement packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Food Allergies In Homer Children

Friday, January 31st, 2014

Food Allergies In Homer Children The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology estimates that around eight percent of U.S. kids are affected by food allergies.

Eight foods account for most children’s food allergies in Anchorage: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, shellfish, soy, nuts, and wheat. Strawberries and tomatoes can also cause food allergies in young Homer kids, though generally not in adults.

Type and severity of allergy symptoms in Anchorage kids vary, but may show up as itchy eyes, nose or throat, trouble breathing, gastrointestinal upset, or hives.

If you suspect your child may have a food allergy, keep a food journal of everything he or she eats (including beverages) for a week to show your Wasilla pediatrician. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may scratch the skin with a small amount of an allergen to observe the reaction.

Music is Magic for Palmer Kids

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

Wasilla immunization schedule

Parents in and around Palmer know that healthy kids need proper nutrition, lots of exercise, and well-rounded lives. It’s also safe to say that for all children, a well-rounded life should include music in one form or another.

Studies have shown that music does so much more than simply entertain!

Did you know that children who are involved in some kind of musical training during school perform better in math and science? They also develop better coordination, do better in reading, concentrating, and goal setting. Studies show that students who are involved in a music education program also perform better on their SATs, and are more likely to attend college.

While it’s ideal for Kenai, Homer, and Wasilla parents to start their kids young, it is never too late to learn a musical instrument. Music stores in the Anchorage area will have great advice on age-appropriate music lessons and teachers for your curious child.

But lessons aren’t the only way! Keep an eye out in the Palmer community for musical events such as church, school, and community performance programs. Check with Kenai, Homer, and Wasilla libraries, websites, and community centers for more information.

Keep up the good work, Palmer parents! Your children are lucky to have you to help them stay safe, healthy, and happy!

Computer Tips For Palmer Kids

Computer Tips For Palmer Kids

If your Palmer children are anything like mine, they love to spend time on the computer. Instead of hopping on their bike and zipping over to 99501 to talk to their friends they would rather email or Facebook them. When I was growing up in Anchorage, we used cans tied together with yarn to communicate from tree house to tree house and as far as mail went we used good old snail mail.

My name is Geneve Campbell and this is my blog where I advocate for Palmer children’s health and talk about nuggets. Today we will discuss the importance of teaching our Alaska kids safe habits to govern their computer time to help prevent injury.

Palmer parents and caregivers need to regulate children’s computer usage
. Moderation is the key. My kids would sit in front of the computer all day if I let them, but we set the timer for 30 minutes and then it is time to choose another activity, like enjoying the Palmer sunshine. By taking breaks the muscles used while computing are able to mend and repair themselves so that they are less likely to become injured.

Kids need to vary the ways they operate the computer so that different muscles get used. Instead of manipulating a mouse for every command, teach them to use a touch pad. Many Anchorage software stores sell voice activated systems which allow kids to switch up how they work at the computer to allow different muscles to work. Encourage your kids to take breaks to stretch and even shut their eyes for a few moments.

Alaska parents should coach their children on the proper way to sit at the computer. Posture is very important and should be loose and inherent, not stiff or unnatural. The habits we teach our Alaska kids will serve them throughout their lives.

Healthy habits for Alaska kids include eating nutritious food and exercising daily. For more information about keeping your kids healthy contact me today.

4 Things Your Palmer Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

Wasilla Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the Wasilla, Homer, and Kenai areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the Palmer Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Anchorage families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity are often on my mind. I am the owner of a direct sales Anchorage area home business that sells nuggets.
